Hello, Movie Buffs!
Directed by Pierre Morel (The Gunman) and written by Chad St. John (London Has Fallen), Peppermint (2018) is an action-packed vigilante film about revenge and justice. The film follows Riley North (Jennifer Garner) after she survives a drive-by shooting that killed her husband and daughter. But when the judge lets the murders go free and tries to send her to a mental hospital, Riley takes matters into her own hands. After disappearing 5 years earlier, Riley is back with a special skill set that neither the cops nor the cartel were anticipating, and she will stop at nothing until justice has been served.

The story is pretty straightforward with a couple of small twists you expected and the pacing is just right. However, the action is the highlight of this film as it is tailored to demonstrate the lethal-ness of Garner's character as she brings pain and justice with a variety of guns, close quarters mixed martial arts, and little strategic maneuvering. The action is a bit reminiscent to other films like the Equalizer, Taken, and even a bit of John Wick but still manages to be its own thing due to the satisfying camera work and realistic sound effects that gives the action an original quality.
The cast is great with Jennifer Garner (Electra; Love, Simon) being the most noteworthy. Garner is one of my favorite actresses and she continues to surprise men with her skills as an actress. Peppermint plays into the two main types of characters that we have seen from Garner. At first, the film plays into her motherly roles from Love, Simon (2018) and Alexander and the…Very Bad Day (2014) while the rest of the film takes her back to her edgier roles from Alias (TV 2006) and Elextra (2005). This contrast makes Garner one of the biggest twists in the film and allows for the story to poke fun at this contrast throughout the film.

Overall, Peppermint (2018) is an entertaining action-packed vigilante film. The story is straightforward and the pacing is just right, while the action is a highlight of the film. Jennifer Garner proves to be a major twist in the film as she delivers a stellar performance and does a great job in bringing a new action heroine, to the big screen. And I don’t think that we have seen the last of Riley North. I highly recommend this film.

"You didn't serve the justice. I will."
- Riley North
