Hello, Movie Buffs!
From stage to the big screen, director Phyllida Law has given Mamma Mia (2008) the care and attention it deserves to be a cult classic. With its shimmering Greek location and ABBA’s iconic songs from the 70’s and 80’s, Mamma Mia is an old school musical that is fun and entertaining.

The story is endearing, simple to follow, and filled with tiny details of humor so that the film remains enjoyable from beginning to end. The story while simple has a few life lessons about motherhood, friendship, daughter-hood, the failure of male commitment, forgiveness, and romance. In short, the story teaches us to appreciate life, value forgiveness, and embrace love.
There is something the ABBA’s sound that allows for them to produce some of the greatest pop music we have ever been given. Considering that the films cast are not natural singers, it makes you wonder if they would do the songs justice. Luckily they do. The songs blend perfectly with the story, to the point that they sound as if they were originally written for the film. This sense of continuity allows the viewers to enjoy every scene and that is how a musical should feel. The songs should be worthy enough to stand on their own and in this film they do.
Law ‘s style of film-making is different and its clear that she knows how to build a big production number but her camerawork tends to roam the set. However, the scenery is stunningly beautiful. The sun shimmers on the crystal clear water, the palm trees sway to a tune of their own, and the vibrancy of the costumes are perfect for the location.
The cast performances are superb both the acting and the singing. Amanda Seyfried is one of the best singers in the film, Meryl Streep is flawless, Dominic Cooper has great chemistry with Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan is charismatic, Stellan Skarsgard is funny, Colin Firth is spontaneously energetic, and Julie Walters & Christine Baranski are unforgettably funny in a way that ties the whole film together.

Overall, Mamma Mia (2008) is an amazing and funny family-musical that will put a smile on your face from start to finish. The film was translated from stage to film with care and attention it deserves. The story is simple with a few life lessons that teach us to appreciate life, value forgiveness, and embrace love. The songs blend perfectly with the story, which is what any true musical should do. And the cast performance both acting and singing were superb. Mamma Mia is easily a cult classic that I highly recommend.

"Typical isn't it? You wait 20 years for a dad and then three come along at once."
