Directed and co-written by Vicky Jewson (Born of War, Lady Godiva) and co-written by Rupert Whitaker (Born of War), Close (2019) is an entertaining action thriller on Netflix. The film follows Sam Carlson (Noomi Rapace), a tough as nails bodyguard/counter-terrorism expert, who is recruited to protect Zoe Tanner (Sophie Nelisse), a young and ungrateful heiress, who is now the sole owner of her father’s mining company much to the dismay her step-mother Rima (Indira Varma), who actually built the company. When Zoe travels to Zambia to check in on the company, the home security system at her house is breached, forcing Sam and Zoe to go on the run from people trying to killing them at every turn. Who’s behind the attacks? Is it someone close to Zoe? Or is it someone with an even bigger agenda?

I was surprised and intrigued when I found out that Sam’s character is based on a real-life female bodyguard, Jacque Davis. Close is a genuine action film that is well paced and delivers a realistic storyline containing a few plot twists that were largely unexpected. The action is also realistic, so don’t expect to find Sam using an overabundance of female prowess to take down the bad guys. In fact, she tries to avoid confrontation because it tends to leave a trail and slows down their escape plan.
The performances are strong and compelling. Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, What Happened to Monday) delivers as a bonafide action star who delivers incredible action sequences that are up-close, raw, and bloody. Sophie Nelisse (The Book Thief, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged) was good as the high maintenance heiress who earns some strength while on the run. More than half of the film follows these two characters, it is required for them to have great chemistry together and they do. The rest of the characters perform well, with Indira Varma (Human Target, Game of Thrones) also giving a good performance.

Overall, Close is a good action thriller that delivers a genuine story with plot twists and realistic action sequences that are up-close, raw, and bloody. The performances were strong and compelling with the most noteworthy being Noomi Rapace, whose character is based on a real-life bodyguard, Sophie Nelisse, and Indira Varma. If you enjoyed Taken (films or TV show) or even The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, then I am sure you will enjoy this one as well.

Final Vote --- 7 of 10 stars
