Directed and co-written by Jason Stone (Th Calling) and co-written by Andrew C. Erin (Clara’s Deadly Secret), At First Light (2018) is a B-rated sci-fi film that follows high school senior, Alex Lainey (Stefanie Scott), who has an encounter with mysterious lights that appear over her small town. Afterwards, she soon discovers that she now has supernatural abilities and only her childhood friend Sean Terrel (Theodore Pellerin) can help her. The authorities put a target Alex and the pair must go on the run as they try to discover the truth behind Alex’s transformation. What are the mysterious lights? What is their purpose? And what does this mean for everyone else?

In most Alien encounter films, the aliens contact Earth in some form or fashion and the adults handle it. However, in At First Light, it is up to two teenagers, Alex and Sean, to confront science-fiction-like situations, like in E.T (1982) and Super 8 (2011). The film’s sci-fi element more closely resembles a mixture of Close Encounter Of The Third Kind (1977), Contact (1997), and Chronicle (2012). There is not a whole lot of action sequences featuring big explosions or fight scenes where Alex uses her newfound abilities, rather it is a more thought-provoking kind of sci-fi film. The story is about both the communication problem between humans and aliens, much like Arrival (2017), and the recurring love between Alex and Sean. It is clear that something happened to Alex and Sean in the past that would make them become distant with each other, and yet there still remains to be some attraction between them.
The cast of characters did great. Stefanie Scott (Beautiful Boy) and Theodore Pellerin (Boy Erased) did great both in their respective roles and in their chemistry together. Saïd Taghmaoui (Wonder Woman) was an interesting addition and Percy Hynes White (The Gifted) was a bit unexpected but fitting.

Overall, At First Light (2018) is a pretty decent and entertaining sci-fi film that is more thought-provoking than action-packed. It’s a B film but the story will keep you interested with questions like: What are the mysterious lights? What is their purpose? And what does this mean for everyone else? And the cast gave good performances. If you enjoyed films like Close Encounter Of The Third Kind (1977), Contact (1997), and Chronicle (2012) then you will enjoy this one.

Final Vote --- 6.5 of 10 stars
