Hello, Movie Buffs!
J.J. Abrams (LOST and Star Trek films) is one of the best directors of his time and his direction here is dynamic in a way that pays homage to Brian De Palma’s Mission Impossible (1996). Mission Impossible 3 (2006) is an intelligent, ruthless, and well-paced action film that brings the audience to the edge of their seat with feelings of hopelessness and unforgiving anguish. This is not to say that the film completely humorless but there is no doubt that the stakes are higher, the theme is grimmer, and the film ends with a more effective conclusion than its predecessors.

Now some of you make think that the story is simply “business as usual” but that is not the case. The story is both unhinged and controlled in a way that adds tension without relying on emotional strings to move the audience. In a way the story is similar to LOST in its delivery because while the overall plot is simple there were still a number of plot twist that completely unexpected; if you thought you could predict what was going to happen here then guess again.
It would have been too easy for the filmmakers to give audiences your typical action sequence, which is why I am glad that they decided to push the limits of our expectation. The action sequences were spot on. There was a nice balance between a fast pace and suspenseful tension that gave the action sequences an almost James Bond feel to it. In addition, I am immensely thankful that this time around the romance actually looks and feels genuine, unlike the clichĂ© romance from MI 2 (2000); this iin partrt due to the chemistry between the two love-birds.
The cast performances were great. The most noteworthy performance was Phillip Seymour Hoffman – who just won an Oscar for Capote (2005) – as Owen Davian who proves to be much more intelligent and menacing villain than his predecessors. But that is not all. Hoffman does what his predecessors failed to do, he portrayed a villain who also had charisma and presence. For example, there is a scene where he is at a lavish party being practically harmless but he gives off a presence that says he’s more dangerous then he looks and only adds to the depth of his character. Tom Cruise is also good in his respective role. You can clearly see that he has grown since the first film. For instance, you can see on his face how much it pains him to keep his secret identity from his fiancĂ©e, Julia (Michelle MonaghanSource Code and Fallout). His ability to go from being a suave and stealthy secret agent one moment to evoking feelings of pain and sympathy the next demonstrates the sheer level of tenacity he puts in his performance.

Overall, the success of Mission Impossible 3 (2006) relies heavily on the director/co-writer J.J. Abrams. Any film can have all the bells and whistles it needs to be successful but if it doesn’t have a competent director (and writers too) then all the bells and whistles will not matter. And Abrams delivers across the board. The story carries elements of Abrams work on LOST, in that it is simple to understand and yet suspenseful and unpredictable. If you are a fan of the series or you have only ever seen the first film then I highly recommend this film to you as you won’t be disappointed.
