Hello, Movie Buffs!
Mission Impossible 2 (2000) is entirely different from the 1996 film. The production team wanted to take the second film in a different direction and to do that they hired Hong Kong’s action-film director, John Woo (Red Cliff 1 & 2), to take the helm of this film and writer Robert Towne returns to write the script. The ending result is a 2000 sequel action film that grossed higher than its 1996 predecessor.

The first film relied on intrigue and enhanced special effects to create a complex story, whereas this film relies on death-defying stunts and action-adventure to create a simple story that is easy to follow. One big difference with this film is the addition of romance, particularly for Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) considering that the 1996 film lacked romance. The use of romance here elevated the story almost a James-Bond-level film and demonstrated a level of maturity that needs to be seen with every sequel film. From beginning to end the film utilizes beautiful locations that give the film a nice look throughout. Director Woo’s over the top style is restrained a little but there is no mistaking his touch on this film. The cinematography has a warm and exotic setting to the film, and the action – minus the blood and gore – is signature to Woo’s previous works. The use of slow-motion techniques during a number of scenes is a bit overkill but luckily the cast help elevate the film overall.
The cast is great and their performances were solid. A previous film by John Woo suffered because it was obvious that most of the spectacular scenes were done using stunt-men. So this time around Woo has Tom Cruise do most if not all of his stunt which is impressive considering what his character does. His chemistry with Thandie Newton’s character is decent. Thandie Newton (2012 & Star Wars: Solo) is good. She is first introduced as a jewel thief that somewhat pays homage to Catwoman but after she plays her part she becomes almost nonexistent towards the last half of the film; she goes from being a jewel thief to a cliché damsel in distress. Ethan’s fellow IMF friends Ving Rhames as Luther and John Polson (The Boys) as Billy Baird give some good lines of comic relief. Dougray Scott (Ever After: A Cinderella Story) is a much better villain than the last one, although he is a bit lackluster.

Overall,  Mission: Impossible 2 (2000) is an action-packed sequel that out-grossed it’s predecessor at the box office. The story made great use of a romantic storyline, the visuals were impressive, the action was thrilling, and the characters help elevate the story as a whole. There were a few moments where we could have needed some more action but all in all this a great film in the vein of James Bond. I recommend this to anyone who is a fan or simply enjoys the series.
