Hello, Movie Buffs!
Director Chris Columbus and writer Steve Kloves return for the second installment of J.K. Rowling’s bestselling Young Adult series, Harry Potter. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) builds from the first film and follows Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) and Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) in their second year at Hogwarts school. Here we are introduced to Hogwarts’ new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Gilderoy Lockhart (Kenneth BranaghMurder on the Orient Express) who is an inept and self-centered wizard. But it becomes clear early on that Lockhart is the least of their worries once they discover that Salazar Slytherin’s legendary Chamber of Secrets has been opened.

Rather than try cash in on the success of the first film, The Chamber of Secrets (2002) is just as intensely imaginative and visually stunning as the original but with a much darker theme that helps build the story overall. The story follows the book nicely and while it does get darker there is plenty more humor, action, and detail that makes up for an almost basic storytelling. The special effects were better and the music score by John Williams was superb as always.
The original cast gives superb performances but aside from bringing back the original characters, the film also adds details that help set up the third film, The Prisoner of Azkaban (2003). We get a fairly clear introduction to Azkaban, the wizard prison, and a mention that Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane) spent some time there in his youth. There is also an introduction of Draco Malfoy’s (Tom Felton) father, Lucius Malfoy played by Jason Isaacs who adds perfectly to the rivalry between the Malfoy’s and Weasley’s – the financial situations of both families are night and day. Kenneth Branagh gives a delightfully fun performance that is different from previous roles of his.

Overall, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) is an entertaining sequel that stays pretty close to the book and improves since the last film. It is just as intensely imaginative and visually stunning as the original film but with a much darker theme as well as plenty more humor, action, and detail that helps build the story. The special effects were better, the music was superb as always, and the cast gives wonderful performances. I highly recommend this film to fans of the series.

"Scared, Potter?"   - Draco Malfoy
