Hello, Movie Buffs!
This is not your typical big-budget action-packed shark film. Instead, it is a nice and thrilling low-budget film that offers a great story and enough tension despite there only being two main characters and one setting for the entire film. What I enjoyed most about this film is that they took the simple idea of two girls being trapped under a pool and turned it into a thrilling and nerve wrecking film. The director/writer showcases the fear of being stuck/trapped in open water (whether it’s inside or outside).
The film has a great message about the power of sisterhood and the strength to never give up; leave your monsters in the past and family is important even if there are issues present. Its chilling to the bone without the need for killer sharks or crocodiles and with very little to almost no gore. The acting was pretty good. The underwater scenes were shot well as you could feel the coldness that the characters were feeling; you can feel their pain, frustration, fear, and agony throughout the film. You can tell from the start that both sisters are still dealing with personal issues from their past as well as harboring deep feelings towards each other because of something that happened in their past. At times their bickering is a bit annoying but once you figure out their secret then it all starts to make sense, although I do wish that it had not taken as long to get to that point. The villain is interesting due to them not being your typical villain (heartless and compassionless), they were fitting for this film.
Overall, 12 Feet Deep: Trapped Sisters (2016) is a brutal, harrowing, and thrilling film to see. I was on edge for most of this film and was pleasantly surprised with its ending. This is a very original idea for a story that while sounding a little bit ridiculous does catch your attention and make you realize how easy it is for something like this to happen to someone. The acting from such a small group of characters is great. If you enjoyed 47 Meters Down (2017) then you will enjoy this film as well.
