Hello, Movie Buffs!
A Category 5 Hurricane bearing down on her Florida hometown but Haley (Kaya Scodelario) ignores the evacuation orders in order to search for her missing and unresponsive father, Dave (Barry Pepper). When she returns to her childhood home and finds her father gravely injured in the crawl space under the house, things go from bad to worst when they learn that they're not alone. Trapped by rapidly rising flood waters and a group of giant Alligators, Haley and Dave must fight for every second of survival and hope that they will be rescued in time. Can they escape these apex predators before the storm reaches its peak or are they merly prey to be hunted?

Directed by Alexandre Aja (Piranha 3D, The Hills Have Eyes) and written by Michael and Shawn Rasmussen (The Inhabitants), Crawl (2019) is an intense and exciting film that knows the nature of its premise and doesn’t go beyond what it set out to do. This is a simple survival horror story that is fast paced and has a decent backstory about a father/daughter relationship and how they bonded over Haley’s swimming. The intensity is genuine and like other horror films, it builds strongly throughout. There is a brief moment where the film slows down enough for the characters to tend to their wounds and explore the backstory of their relationship but then the pace picks up with even more intense and gory scenes. The gore is executed well, the special effects are better than what I could have hoped for, and the loud music score makes you feel like your right there in the story with the characters.
The cast performances were incredible, especially since there were only two main characters and a few supporting characters that only had a few minutes of screen time each. Kaya Scodelario (The Maze Runner series) and Barry Pepper (Saving Private Ryan, Maze Runner 1 & 2) both gave powerful performances. Kaya gives a controlled performance of Haley a strong young woman who also happens to be a strong swimmer. Barry is a seasoned actor and is convincing as the father Dave, who is afraid of losing parts of himself. Together they are convincing as a father and daughter duo, who are quite possibly stubborn enough to cheat death numerous times.
Overall, Crawl (2019) is an intense and thrilling disaster horror film that sticks to its story and doesn’t go beyond what it set out to do. The intensity is genuine and building, the gore is executed well, the pace is fast, the special effects are good, and the cast performances were strong and convincing. If you enjoyed films like Piranha 3D (2010), 47 Meters Down 1 & 2 (2017 & 2019), The Shallows (2016), The Meg (2018), and more then I highly recommend that you see this film, especially in theaters.

Final Vote --- 7.8 of 10 stars
