Hello, Movie Buffs!
Written and directed by Dean DeBlois (Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon), How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014) is the sequel to the DreamWorks Dragons franchise that was a success 4 year prior to this film. DreamWorks studios start with something amazing and then pushes it even further like Shrek and Kung Fu Panda. This film takes place 5 years after the events of the first film and there is peace between Vikings and dragons, unlike anything before. Hiccup is being groomed to take over as chief from his father Stoick, while his relationship with Astrid has grown into something more. His friendship with Toothless, a rare Night Fury dragon, has become stronger as they explore new lands and discover new dragons. But one of their new discoveries uncovers something that answers long-forgotten questions and threatens this new-found peace between the Vikings and dragons. Will Hiccup and Toothless save their friends and their village before its too late? Or will everything they know be destroyed?

The story is even more entertaining than the last one with more special effects, battle sequences, and humor. But other than being an improvement overall, the film also sticks to its original roots by focusing more on character development, which helps deter it from only being a visual showcase. The story is imbued with emotion that makes it an exposition and develops a strong relationship between the characters and the audience. There are also some quiet moments when the once disconnected family is reunited and it manages to recapture the same heart of the friendship between Hiccup and Toothless that we saw in the first film, which in turn makes the film even more endearing.
Jay Beruchel (This is the End), Gerard Butler (Hunter Killer), Craig Ferguson (The Lat, Lat show with Craig Ferguson), America Ferrera (Superstore), Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Superbad), Jonah Hill (Maniac), T.J. Miller (Ready Player One) and Kristen Wiig (Ghostbuster) return to provide consistent and excellent voice acting. While newcomers Cate Blanchett (Ocean’s 8), Djimon Hounsou (Shazam!) and Kit Harrington (Game of Thrones) all do a wonderful job with their respective performances.

Overall, How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014) is an entertaining sequel to the original film of 2010. Everything about this film has been improved and upgraded since the last film; the special effects, battle scenes, and humor. Even the story has found a way to connect with the audience on a much deeper and emotional level. Personally, I believe that this is a film that both kids and adults will enjoy.
