Hello, Movie Buffs!
Rob Cohen the director who brought us The Fast and the Furious (2001), XxX (2002), Stealth (2005), and The Boy Next Door (2015) has returned with one of the cheesiest heists to date. Hurricane Heist (2018), the film’s title alone tells the basic premise of the story, it’s about a heist that takes place during a hurricane, and that’s pretty much all you need to understand the rest.
Hurricane Heist is exciting, loud, action-packed, and funny film that contains some decent visual effects. As I  mentioned earlier the plot is simple, robbers try to steal old dollar bills from the United States Treasury during a hurricane, which provides the perfect cover. Almost. The only thing the robbers were not counting on was the fact that the treasury’s backup generator would blow in the storm.  As a result, their only key to getting into the vault lies with the guard Casey, who just so happens left to find a repairman, Breeze, right before the robbers showed up. Now it is up to Casey, Breeze, and his brother Will to stop the bad guys from getting away with the money whilst surviving a devastating storm, category 5. That being said this is not a disaster film, in fact, it is far from being a disaster film. A disaster film is something like San Andreas (2015), 2012 (2009), and The Impossible (2012) to name a few. They tell a story of human conflicts under disaster and shows how a family or friends come together to survive. Hurricane Heist is more like the Sharknado films or Mega Shark Vs. Crocosaurus (2010). It’s a cheesy film that you will most likely watch on Sci-Fy Saturdays but none the less it is a good film to see.
The drama and interaction between the characters are great. Some of the twists and turns are predictable but a few big ones are not expected, which is great because you never know who you can really trust. Toby Kebbell (War for Planet of the Apes) and Ryan Kwanten (Flicka) were good as brothers with a tragic past after a childhood encounter killed their father and left them distant. The only issue I have with them is their not so great Southern accents, especially since Kebbell is British and Kwanten is Australian and I am used to them speaking with their native accents. Maggie Grace (Taken) was good as Casey, the loyal guard who will do whatever it takes to stop the bad guys. Kind of like a more decorated and cheesier version of Paul Blart. The bad guys are led by Ralph Ineson (Guardians Of The Galaxy and The Huntsman: Winter’s War), the only issue with his character that he played the typical “that bad guy” character. It also doesn’t help much that one guy tries to be the “loose cannon bad guy” but he doesn’t ever leave the shallow end of the pool. However, because the film is as cheesy as it is, the characters – in all their flaws – work well together and on screen.
Overall, Hurricane Heist (2018) is a good action film that’s not meant to be taken seriously. It’s meant to ridiculous and cheesy, it delivered everything it said it would in the trailers. While it’s not worth seeing at the movies, it’s good enough to rent or better yet wait till they release it on TV. If you enjoyed films like Sharknado, Mega Shark Vs. Crocosaurus (2010) or just about any Sci-Fy channel movie then you will enjoy this one as an easy heist film that requires very little brain power to watch.
